How to Tell if You Landlord is Illegally Harassing You in New Jersey

You can call the police on your landlord if they threaten violence or say anything intended to scare you or remove access to your apartment in any way.

Landlords may attempt to harass or intimidate their tenants to force them out of their apartments. Under New Jersey law, many of these actions are considered disorderly persons offenses - which are criminal. These illegal actions include:

  • Any kind of violence including threatening to kill or injure the party in possession;
  • Words or actions intending to cause fear;
  • Removing your personal property from the premises;
  • Padlocking or otherwise changing locks to the property; or
  • Shutting off, or causing to be shut off, vital services such as heat, electricity or water

If your landlord does any of these things, you should call the police. If the landlord doesn’t stop the behavior, he can be arrested, charged with a crime, and even go to jail.
